Best of all, feature updates are frequent.

The workspace in TwistedBrush is designed to reduce the number of floating windows that overlay your painting surface freeing you from the chore of constantly shuffling windows around. Over 50 brushes are right at your fingertips, along with numerous color palette options and tools that get assigned to your right button click to further streamline your artist workflow.

    Sketchkbook
TwistedBrush works much like a real sketchbook. When you start TwistedBrush it is like opening your sketchbook, it is immediately ready to draw or paint on your page. When you're done with a page you turn to the the next page. You never need to manually save your work. But of course you can export your pictures to any number of the standard image formats such as JPEG, PNG, BMP, TGA, TIFF, GIF, etc.

    Page Explorer
Like a unlimited supply of sketchbooks, TwistedBrush keeps your pages stored in books. Up to 500 pages per book and an unlimited number of books means you'll never run out of paper! The Page Explorer makes it easy to view and reorganize your pages in your sketchbooks. Even assign a name to your sketch book if you like.

    Select Brushes
In any digital painting program the core of the system is in the brushes. Therefore easy access to the brushes is key. In TwistedBrush there are over 2000 brushes included with more added all the time. With the brush shortcut system your favorite brushes are always ready for you.

    ArtSets
ArtSets organize the brushes in TwistedBrush into groups of 60 brushes. There are a variety of types of ArtSets, from standard art tools, specialize collections, patterns brushes, cloners, photo retouching brushes, image brushes, etc.

    Editing ArtSets
It is easy to create your own brushes and then store them into your own ArtSets. All the tools used by the creators of TwistedBrush to create brushes and ArtSets are included. You can even create your own collections of brushes easily by entering the ArtSet build mode and selecting brushes from other ArtSets. Then if you like, make these your shortcuts with a press of a button.

    Select Colors
Color selections are plentitful with the included color palettes. Additionally you can tweak selected colors, create your own palettes, select colors from your picture, from a reference image, the scratch layer or even the trace source image. Dynamic palettes also aid in color selections, allowing you to pick from the history of colors used or hue ranges from your currently selected color.

    Tools
All the tools you expect are available from the tool bar. When you have a tool selected it is activated with the right mouse (stylus) click. This means your drawing brush is always available and you never need to reselect your brush to start painting again. The tools you expect are here, eye dropper, cropping, moving, line, box, ellipse, flood fill, gradiant, masking tools, text, drawing guides, brush rotate, brush cleaner etc.

    Layers
TwistedBrush includes an advanced system called Layers. With layers you can split your work into transparent layers that sit on top on each others and allow for incredible editing and adjustment options even at the end stages of your painting. A wide range of layer blending modes exist including many not available in any other painting program.

    Paper Textures
Use paper textures while you draw to give the feel and look of textured paper and canvas. Over 70 different surface textures are included.

    Masks
Masks are the artists masks you may be familiar with if you've done traditional artwork. TwistedBrush has an extensive set of masking capabilities that you'll use to protect and manipulate areas of your work. Included is a magic wand with a number of different modes for creating your masks. Or use a common shape or one of the many masking brushes to create exactly the mask you need.

    Filters
A filter allows for processing the image all at once. TwistedBrush includes the full range of image processing filters ready to use.

    Tracing Paper
The tracing paper feature gives you the ability to turn your canvas into tracing paper so that you can see a reference image below it for use as a drawing guide. This is invaluable for many types of work.

    Cloning
Cloning, taking image data from somewhere else and placing it into your painting, that is cloning. The source image for the TwistedBrush cloning brushes can be a different image or from another area of your current picture. The cloners can be used to render a photo as a artist drawing, or to touch-up a photo or do many things in-between.

    Scripts
With scripts you can record your painting actions and play them back, recreating your painting from scratch. This has value for trying out different "what-if" scenarios, for teaching pusposes, for animation production when used with the AVI saving option or just for entertainment.

    Pattern Brushes
There are a number of ArtSets that contain Pattern brushes. These brushes paint a pattern on your canvas as you paint. Adjust the size the pattern with the density slider. Categories of patterns include, surface, materials, nature and others.

    Brush Shapes
Most any brush in TwistedBrush can be further enhanced with a shape.

    Drawing Guides
Drawing guides are a visual aid that appears over your canvas to help you with perspective, distances, and general construction of your artwork. A large number of different drawing guides are included.

    Image Brushes
Image brushes are powerful tools for both recreating the flow and feel of working with natural media but also for allowing for extraordinary painting effects. The Image Brushes : Basic ArtSet includes the brushes you need that when used in combination of captured images give you an unlimited supply of brushes.

    Image Warp
When using the Image Warp tool you will be pulling, pushing, pinching, and stretching your image as if it was make of rubber or putty. These tools at the extreme case can be fun for wildly adjusting a photo as shown here. But used with more finese they are invaluble for making minor adjustments to your photos or artwork saving you countless hours or re-working in more labor intensive ways.

    TwistedBrush Feature Details:

Performance: Pixarra's attention to performance is a top priority. As an artist draws and paints the tools should disappear from thought and allow focus on the creative process rather than waiting for the tool to finish its job. In addition the responsiveness of the brush tools should be quick and show marks on the page instantly to allow the artist to enter the "zone".

High Precision 64 Bit Brush Engine: Most graphic programs offer at most 32 bits of color resolution. TwistedBrush represents all image data internally at a full 64 bits of color resolution. This allows for super smooth color mixing and alpha blending.

Brushes: TwistedBrush has over 1500 diffferent brushes included. These range from very simple color dots to realistic representations of natural artist tools to very wild brushes. Here is a very small sampling of some of the brushes that are available. For a complete listing of brushes visit the ArtSet swatches.

Airbrush: Smoothly feathered at the edges as you'd expect an airbrush would be. This brush dab was done with no additional brush effects.

Watercolor crayons: Drawing with a textured wet watercolor crayon with color blending and some grainyness.

Oil pastel: Even more grain shows in this brush, but it still blends with the existing color that is already on the page.

Gausy brush: Actually created with the basic oil pastel brush style but altered with a multiply and jitter brush effect.

Fine oil brush: Based on one of the basic brush types that draws with individual bristles of color, dynamically changing with each stroke. This basic brush with modified with the multiply and jitter brush effects.

Color pencil: A basic color pencil brush type but with a darken color blending brush effect. Brush effects that blend colors allow for a variety of on the fly color mixing. In this case blue strokes were drawn first. The red strokes when drawn blend with the blend stroke just like color pencils where lighter colors don't overlay darker colors. However notice the yellow, with repeated stroking the lighter color can overlay the darker blue.

Wet watercolors: A brush that blends and dilutes with the color that is already on the canvas.

Thick oil paint: Each bristle mark is visible with each pushing its way throught the paint that is already layed down.

Vegas scarf: Brush effects are used here to alter the basic realistic brush type to create a brush that doesn't exist in reality. In this case the spike effect is used to give the overall feeling of the storke.

Paper Textures: A wide variety of paper and canvas textures can be selected so that brush strokes respond with the texture as they are placed on the paper or canvas.

The textures are easily selected from the main workspace.

Filters: Over 50 filters can be used to quickly alter and adjust your image. The includes basic photographic filters that adjust brightness and contrast or equalize the colors, artist filters that allow you to mimic a oil painting with a click of the mouse, blurring filters, noise filters, noise generation filters, distorting filters, sharpening filters etc.

Tracing Paper: A source image is shown below the current paper as if the current paper was as thin as tracing paper. This allows for using a photograph or another drawing as a guide when doing a new picture. With a press of the hot key the tracing paper is turned off and on allowing you to check on your progress.

Source Image: This is the source image that will be traced. It appears as the previous image in the sketchbook.

Drawing Image: This is the paper that is being drawing on. Notice that the source image is visible but appears faded, just like looking through tracing paper. Also notice the black marks on the left hand side, that is were some drawing is taking place using the image of the flower as a guide.

Cloners: Related to the Tracing Paper feature Cloners are brushes that have a Trace Blend or Trace Color brush effects applied to them. Used in combination with the tracing paper feature, when on not only does the source image show through but the color that is used for the drawing is based on the color of the source image rather then the color that is currently selected. This use in combination with the other powerful brush effects makes for a very realistic representation of a painted or drawn version of the source image. An entire ArtSet of 60 brushes is included that has a variety of cloning brushes.

Masks: With masks part of an image can be protected from changes. This works just like traditional artist masks or friskets. There are numerous ways to create and edit masks, they can be painted on with masking brushes, added to with special masking tools for rectangles and ellipses, the masking magic wand can be used to mask area of similar color or you can even convert and existing image to a mask.

Layers: Imagine overlaying sheets of clear drawing material on top of each other and being able to freely paint and draw on each layer. This is the idea of layers. A powerful system of image creation that allows for continued editing on a image even after it is nearing completion. For example if painting a landscape. On the background layer place the general tone of the picture blocking in color areas. On the next layer up paint the sky, next the clouds, next distance land or trees, another layer for middle ground areas, and last for the foreground. If you decide to repaint the clouds no problem go back to the cloud layer and touch them up or start the clouds from scratch. The other areas of your work are not affected.

This is just part of the power of layers, layers can also be made semi-transparent to give various coloring effects, and layers can be blended togather with a large assortment of mixing modes. The blending modes support include, mulitply, screen, darken, lighten, difference, negation, exclusion, overlay, hard light, soft light, dodge, burn, reflect, glow, add, subtract, texturize, alpha filter, alpha black outline, alpha overlay outline and alpha highlight.

ArtSets: Within TwistedBrush is the brush collection idea called ArtSets. An ArtSet is a collection of up to 60 brush presets. A brush preset can be everything about a brush, including color, size and of course the type of brush and effect. With ArtSets similar brushes can be grouped together for ease of use. A large number of ArtSets are included with TwistedBrush, but anyone can create there own, it's as easy as clicking on an emply brush slot.

Essentials ArtSet: Just one of the ArtSets included with TwistedBrush. This one includes a number of basic brushes and tools grouped together.

Scripting: A macro system to record most actions within TwistedBrush and later play them back. This could be an entire picture from start to finish or a common action that needs to be repeated. Scripts can be saved to file and shared with others. It's a great learning tools to record a script and share it with somepne so they can see how you created an image.

Pear Script: Here is a sample script output, reduced in size for this website. This entire drawing as it was created was recorded and now can be played back over and over again, showing each stroke as it was originally drawn, but at a bit faster rate.

Script Brushes: Bringing together the powerful brush engine, ArtSet and the scripting system, results in Script Brushes. A script brush is a script that can be treated like a brush, and therefore can be placed in an ArtSet and drawn with, relative to the position on the canvas that you paint rather then the original recorded location. This is an innovative system that surpases clip art or canned images used for composition. Since the script is played back and therefore is just like it's being drawn for the first time it can properly interact with the colors that are already on the page.

Planet Script Brush: Here is the sample output of a script brush. Since it's a brush, to use it is as easy as selecting the brush from an ArtSet and clicking on the page where you want the planet drawn. It is not a saved image! It is redrawn each time you click.

Undo/Redo:Yes there are multiple levels of undo and redo. Up to 50 levels in fact, memory permitting.

File Formats: Most standard image formats are supported. This Include, JPEG, GIF, PNG, TIFF, TGA, PCX, PSD, BMP, PCD, WMF and EMF.

Sketchbook Paradigm: Twistedbook is designed around the concept of a sketchbook. This allows for quick understanding of what is required to use the software. The first time you start TwistedBrush page 1 of book 1 was visible and available for drawing on. Compare this to most other art programs where you must tell the software that you want to create a new page as your first action. When you are ready to move on to a new page in TwistedBrush you simply turn the page, your work is automatically saved. Just like a real sketchbook, you wouldn't expect your work to disappear just because you turned the page.

In TwistedBrush you can have an unlimited number of sketchbooks each with up to 100 pages. Pages in a book will default to the same size or they can all be different sizes. When you proceed to a new page in the book that does not exist yet the page size used will be that of the previous page

TwistedBrush has been designed from day one to be easy to use. Many art program overload the user with countless widgets and gadgets on the screen often making the drawing area a second class consideration. Since TwistedBrush is a artist creation tool, the drawing area remains the focus with all the basic tools easy to access.

Drawing Tablet Support: Using the universal Wintab tablet driver system most all drawing tablets are supported and allows for pressure sensitive assignment to brush size, density, opacity and to any of the nearly 200 brush effects!

Brush Effects System: Brush effects are an advanced part of TwistedBrush and need only be understood by those artists wishing to create their own brushes. It is an extremely powerful system that allows for an incredible variety of brushes to be created. It is in effect (pun intended) it's own specialized programming language and continues to grow and expand with each release. There are nearly 200 different brush effects that numerous brush effect envelopes that further modify the effect over time. A very small sampling of the effects include, scatter, jitter, orbit, burst 25, spike, tangle, lineto, radial, spin, spiral1, blend multiply, mask, mask paint, erase mode, draw gate, filter, scrumble 2, mirror page, kaleidoscope, 3D top left, matrix 3, circle 32, opacity, blend trace, color trace, hue rnd, etc.

Spiral Galaxy Brush Effects Sample: Here is a series of 8 effects that modify an simple brush type and creates (see below) a spiral galaxy with a single stroke of the brush. This is a very advanced brush and is part of the SpaceScape ArtSet. Note: most brushes are not this complex.

Spiral Galaxy Brush Effects Sample Output: This is the output of the brush effects shown above.

Random Brush Generation: With a single press of the hot key a new random brush can be created, combining basic brush types, with colors, and effects resulting in a nearly infinite number of possible brushes. Many of core advanced brushes in TwistedBrush were discovered through the use of the random brush generation and random brush explorer system.

Brush History: Records each unique brush you use while creating an image and builds a Brush History ArtSet automatically. This is handy since there are hundreds of different brushes available in TwistedBrush it can be a challenge to keep track of your favorite brush you used while working. Of course you could manually create your favorites ArtSet with a click of the mouse / pen, but this does it for you.

Photo Editing: While TwistedBrush is designed for the artist wishing to draw and paint original images, the tools are present to do the photo editing you need for high quality results. Image scaling with advanced algorithms such as bicubic, B-Spline, and lanczos3. Cropping, rotating and other basic image manipulations. The photographic filters you'd expect to find, masking, layers etc. And if you need to touch up an area, you might just find a brush or two!

Free Upgrades Forever: Not a software feature but an important part of the TwistedBrush package. TwistedBrush is a software system that is constantly being improved and upgrades are free, this included all minor and major upgrades. Invest now.
